Wall volume – · mortar –
The wall volume is length × height × thickness, minus doors and windows. Each brick with its mortar joint takes a little more space than the brick itself: a 9 × 4.5 × 3 inch brick with a 3/8 inch joint fills about 0.089 cubic feet, so a cubic foot of wall holds about 11 bricks.
The space between the bricks is mortar. Dry cement and sand take about 1.27 times the wet volume; a 1:6 mix is one part cement to six of sand. A 50 kg bag of cement is about 1.23 cubic feet. A 10 × 10 foot, 9-inch wall needs about 880 bricks, 2.5 bags of cement and 18 cubic feet of sand with 5% wastage.
Hardware and building-material shops can keep these items, dealers' rates and customers' udhaar in Munshi.
With 9 × 4.5 × 3 inch bricks and a 3/8 inch mortar joint, about 11 bricks per cubic foot: 8 to 9 per square foot of a 9-inch wall, about 4 for a 4.5-inch wall. Smaller local bricks need more, so enter your own brick size.
For a 1:6 mortar, about 3 bags of 50 kg cement per 1,000 bricks, with about 18 cubic feet of sand per bag. The calculator works it out from the mortar between the bricks.
It is an estimate for planning and ordering. Brick sizes, joint thickness and site wastage vary, so keep a few percent extra.
