What does a discount do to my profit?
Profit per item after the discount
–
Add what each item really costs you to bring to the shelf: the supplier's price plus rickshaw or loader charges, the bag, and breakage. Price from that full cost, or your profit leaks away item by item.
Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is what you add on top of cost. A 20% margin on Rs 250 cost is Rs 312.50, but a 20% markup is Rs 300.
A 10% discount on a 20% margin cuts your profit in half, so you need to sell twice as many to stay level. Give a discount only when it moves old stock or brings a customer back.
Add every cost of bringing the item to the shelf (supplier price, transport, bag, breakage) and divide by (1 − margin). A Rs 250 full cost at a 20% margin is Rs 312.50; round up to Rs 315.
No. 20% markup on Rs 250 gives Rs 300, which is only a 16.7% margin. Decide which one you mean before setting prices.
On a 20% margin, a 10% discount cuts profit per item by about half, so you must sell nearly twice as many to earn the same.
