How a jeweller prices a piece

1 tola = 11.664 grams = 12 masha = 96 ratti. The rate is quoted for 24K per tola; 22K is 22/24 of it, 21K is 21/24, and 18K is 18/24.

Price = weight in tola × rate at that karat, plus wastage (kaat, the gold lost or charged for in making) and the making charges (mazdoori). Ask for all three separately: two shops can show the same total but use very different karat or wastage.

When selling old gold back, most shops deduct for karat checking and wastage. Get the karat tested before you agree a price.

Common questions

How is the 22K gold rate worked out from 24K?

Multiply the 24K rate by 22/24 (0.9167). 21K is 21/24 and 18K is 18/24 of the 24K rate.

What is wastage (kaat) in jewellery?

Gold charged for what is lost in making, usually a percentage of the weight or a few ratti per tola. Ask for it separately from making charges.
