What sale price gives the margin I want?
Sale price
–
Margin is profit as a share of the sale price: (sale − cost) ÷ sale. Markup is profit as a share of the cost: (sale − cost) ÷ cost. Buying at Rs 80 and selling at Rs 100 is a 20% margin but a 25% markup.
Mixing the two is the most common pricing mistake: adding 20% to cost gives you only a 16.7% margin. To get a margin you want, divide cost by (1 − margin): Rs 80 ÷ 0.8 = Rs 100.

Usually 5–10% on fast items like oil, sugar and flour, and 15–30% on loose items, snacks and cosmetics. The mix decides the shop's real margin.
