Add tax: price × (1 + rate). Rs 10,000 + 18% = Rs 11,800.
Take tax out of a price that already includes it: price ÷ (1 + rate). Rs 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = Rs 10,000, so the tax is Rs 1,800. Taking 18% straight off Rs 11,800 gives Rs 2,124, which is wrong and a common mistake on bills.
