1 tola = 11.664 grams. In Pakistan the gold rate is quoted per tola, while scales and certificates usually show grams, so you need both.
The units
| Unit | Grams | In tola |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tola | 11.664 g | 1 |
| 1 masha | 0.972 g | 1/12 |
| 1 ratti | 0.1215 g | 1/96 |
| 10 grams | 10 g | 0.857 |
So 1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti, and 1 masha = 8 ratti.
A set weighing 2 tola 3 masha 4 ratti is 23.328 + 2.916 + 0.486 = 26.73 grams.
What 24K, 22K and 21K mean
Karat is the share of pure gold out of 24.
- 24K: about 99.9% pure
- 22K: 22 ÷ 24 = about 91.7%
- 21K: 21 ÷ 24 = 87.5%
- 18K: 18 ÷ 24 = 75%
If 24K is Rs 285,000 a tola, 22K works out to 285,000 × 22 ÷ 24 = Rs 261,250 a tola. Many markets publish their own 22K and 21K rates, so check the day's sarafa rate.
How a piece is priced
A jeweller's bill usually has four parts:
- Gold: net weight (without stones) × the rate for its karat.
- Wastage (kaat): a percentage of the gold, for what is lost in making.
- Making (banwai): per gram or a fixed amount.
- Stones, if any.
Ask for each part on the bill. Two shops can quote the same total in very different ways.
On the counter
Munshi's jewellers software shows every weight in grams and in tola, masha and ratti, works out 22K and 21K from the day's 24K rate, and prints each part of the price on its own line, including old gold taken in exchange.
