Overtime pay in Pakistan: hourly rate and double rate
How to turn a monthly salary into an hourly rate, pay overtime at 1.5× or 2×, handle holiday work, and keep overtime from becoming a month-end fight.

"Main ne 20 ghante extra lagaye." "Nahin, 12." Most overtime arguments happen at month end, about hours nobody wrote down. The sum itself is simple. Here it is, and how to keep it clean.
The overtime calculator does the sum.
Step 1: the hourly rate
Hourly rate = monthly salary ÷ days you count ÷ normal hours a day.
| Salary | Days counted | Hours a day | Hourly rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rs 36,000 | 30 | 8 | Rs 150 |
| Rs 36,000 | 26 | 8 | Rs 173 |
| Rs 50,000 | 30 | 9 | Rs 185 |
Use the same days-counted rule you use for absent days, so the two always match.
Step 2: the overtime rate
- Factories: the Factories Act sets overtime at twice the ordinary rate.
- Shops and offices: many pay 1.5× or the same rate, by agreement.
At Rs 150 an hour, 20 hours at 1.5× is Rs 4,500. At 2× it is Rs 6,000.
Holidays and Sundays
Work on a weekly holiday or a public holiday is often paid at double rate, or a day off is given in its place. Keep holiday hours separate from normal overtime so the right rate goes on each.
Stop the month-end fight
- Write it the same day: date, start, end, and who approved it.
- Agree the rate in writing, in the appointment letter.
- Pay it with the salary, on the slip, as its own line.
When attendance is on a card scanner or the app, the hours are already there, and nobody has to remember.
